I am the newly appointed US Senator from California and am serving in the remainder of VP Kamala Harris' term. I am running for Senate in 2022 to earn the privilege of representing California again for a full 6-year term. If elected, I look forward to continuing to serve the people of California and fighting to protect our shared values. I am a member of the Environmental and Public Works Committee, Budget Committee, Rules Committee, Homeland Security, and the Judiciary committee.

I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. My parents, Santos and Lupe, immigrated from Mexico in pursuit of the American Dream. When I was growing up, I always felt that my community was often overlooked and underserved. After graduating from MIT and working to pursue a career as an engineer, I decided to move home and rededicate my career to public service. In 1999, I ran and won a seat on the Los Angeles City Council at the age of 26.

As a member of the Los Angeles City Council, I worked to expand after school programs, reduce class sizes, expanded libraries, and brought a state-of-the-art children’s museum to my home district. Since my early days of public service, I have put an emphasis on climate change and protecting the environment. As a city councilor, I worked to close and limit the expansion of landfills and led the battle to force the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to dramatically increase the procurement of renewable energy. In 2001, I was elected by my fellow city councilors to serve as the youngest and first Latino Council President in the history of the city of Los Angeles. In my tenure as Council President, I served as Acting Mayor during the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

In 2006, I was elected to the California State Senate where he represented the more than 1 million people in the San Fernando Valley. As a Senator, I passed more than 70 bills some of which were landmark pieces of legislation on fighting climate change to increasing gun safety to expanding educational opportunity.

After nearly 10 successful years as a State Senator in California, I ran and won the privilege to serve as Secretary of State for California. My goal in this was to protect the Democratic process and urge Californians to exercise their power through the voting process. Under my tenure, we reached an all-time high of 22 million registered voters, the highest rate in 70 years.

In December 2020, I received a phone call from Governor Gavin Newsom, appointing me to fill the vacant Senate seat left by now-Vice President Kamala Harris. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve in the U.S. Senate and I look forward to a earning your support for another 6 years.
