Update – 2/18/2025: Escalating Challenges Demand Our Unwavering Commitment

In the days since our last update, the current administration has intensified actions that undermine democratic institutions and civil liberties. Our collective vigilance and proactive engagement are more crucial than ever.

Escalation of Concerning Administrative Actions

The administration has initiated mass layoffs across several federal agencies, targeting probationary employees and extending to full-time staff on fixed-term contracts. Notably, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) saw the termination of hundreds of employees, including those critical to aviation safety, mere weeks after a fatal midair collision in Washington, D.C. These abrupt firings have raised significant concerns about the potential impact on national security and public safety.

Similarly, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) expanded its layoffs beyond probationary staff, dismissing numerous full-time employees. Critics argue that these actions may be illegal and undermine the agency's ability to protect consumers.

Additionally, President Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court to remove the head of a federal agency responsible for protecting whistleblowers, further eroding checks and balances within the government.

The Imperative for Sustained and Collective Action

These developments underscore the urgency for continued and unified resistance. The administration's aggressive policies not only threaten the livelihoods of dedicated public servants but also jeopardize the foundational principles of our democracy. It is imperative that we:

  • Mobilize Locally and Nationally: Participate in peaceful protests, town halls, and community meetings to voice opposition and advocate for change.

  • Support Affected Workers: Offer solidarity and assistance to those impacted by the layoffs, recognizing their vital role in upholding public services.

  • Engage in Civic Processes: Contact elected representatives to express concerns and demand accountability for actions that undermine democratic institutions.

Update – 2/13/2025: Building Momentum Through Unity and Action

As we navigate the challenges posed by the current administration, it's essential to recognize the power of our collective efforts and the positive impact we're making. Our unity and determination are driving forces in the ongoing fight for justice and democracy.

Recent Developments in Resistance Efforts

In recent days, we've seen a resurgence of organized opposition to policies that threaten our democratic institutions. Notably, a group of Democratic members of Congress held a rally in Washington, D.C., protesting actions by Elon Musk under directives from President Trump. This event signifies a growing movement within the political sphere to confront and challenge overreach and the dismantling of federal structures.

Additionally, the federal workforce is demonstrating resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges. The recent dismissal of National Labor Relations Board chair Gwynne Wilcox has sparked legal action and highlighted the commitment of civil servants to uphold the integrity of our institutions. Their courage serves as a reminder of the importance of standing firm against attempts to undermine democratic processes.

The administration's recent moves, such as the proposed reciprocal tariffs, have significant implications for both domestic and international affairs. It's crucial to stay informed and actively engage in discourse to ensure that policies enacted are in the best interest of all citizens.

  • Historic Political Milestones: The recent elections have ushered in a new era of representation, with voters electing two Black women to the U.S. Senate for the first time. Additionally, Delaware's Sarah McBride became the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. Update - 2/10/2025: Strengthening Our Resolve Amid Ongoing Challenges

Dear members of The People's Firewall,

As we continue to stand united against the current administration's actions, it's crucial to assess our progress, recognize the importance of sustained resistance, and celebrate the positive strides we've made together.

Current Resistance Efforts

In recent weeks, we've witnessed a significant surge in nationwide protests opposing President Trump's policies and the initiatives outlined in "Project 2025." Demonstrations have taken place across the country, reflecting widespread dissent and a collective demand for change.

Democratic leaders are also adopting more assertive strategies to counter the administration's agenda. Figures like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Representative Maxwell Frost have been at the forefront of protests, emphasizing the need for a robust opposition.

The Imperative of Continued Action

While these efforts are commendable, it's essential to recognize that the path ahead remains long and challenging. The administration's policies continue to pose significant threats to various facets of our society, from immigration to environmental protections. The judiciary, traditionally a check on executive overreach, may not always serve as a reliable safeguard. Courts often act reactively, and their interventions can come too late to prevent harm.

This reality underscores the necessity for persistent grassroots activism. Our collective voice, expressed through protests, community organizing, and advocacy, remains one of the most potent tools to counteract these challenges.

Uplifting Developments

Amid the adversity, there are inspiring stories that highlight the impact of our collective efforts:

  • Community Solidarity: Across the nation, communities are coming together to support marginalized groups affected by recent policies. Local organizations have mobilized to provide resources, legal assistance, and safe spaces for those in need.

  • Legal Victories: Civil rights organizations have secured significant legal wins, challenging unconstitutional actions and protecting individual freedoms. These victories serve as a testament to the power of persistent legal advocacy.

  • Environmental Initiatives: Despite federal rollbacks, numerous states and municipalities have enacted progressive environmental policies, committing to renewable energy and sustainable practices. These local actions contribute significantly to the broader fight against climate change.

Your Role in the Movement

Every member of The People's Firewall plays a crucial role in this ongoing struggle. Here's how you can continue to make a difference:

  • Stay Informed: Regularly engage with reputable news sources to stay updated on policy changes and resistance efforts.

  • Participate Actively: Join local protests, town halls, and community meetings. Your presence amplifies our collective voice.

  • Support Advocacy Groups: Consider contributing time or resources to organizations that are at the forefront of legal and grassroots battles.

  • Engage in Dialogue: Foster conversations within your community to raise awareness and encourage others to join our cause.

Together, we have the strength to uphold the values of democracy, justice, and equality. Let us remain steadfast, resilient, and hopeful as we navigate the challenges ahead.

In solidarity,

Actions for Week of 2/17/2025

Contact your Reps to Stop the SAVE Act

Act Now to Stop the SAVE Act

Proponents argue that the SAVE Act is about preventing non-citizen voting, but it’s a trick – a back door to making far more sweeping changes.

We already have laws preventing non-citizens from voting and actual instances of non-citizen voting are vanishingly rare to the point of statistical non-existence. Instead, the SAVE Act effectively ends all nonprofit-led voter registration drives, as well as online and mail-in registration, by forcing voters to present proof of citizenship in-person at election offices to register. Additionally, the act disenfranchises tens of millions of eligible voters who either don't have ready access to birth certificates or passports, or can't easily get to an actual elections office. The full House of Representatives may vote on the SAVE Act as soon as next week and the time for nonprofits to take action is now!

Tell your Representative to vote NO on the SAVE Act. It takes just 2 minutes using our advocacy tool.

Subject: Vote NO on the SAVE Act

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, H.R. 22 / S. 128, is an unnecessary and damaging bill that would require voters to present proof of citizenship in person, a birth certificate or passport for most, every time they register or update their registration. However, there’s already a citizenship affirmation on voter registration forms, and cases of actual non-citizen voting are vanishingly rare.

Instead of solving a real problem, the onerous proof of citizenship requirements would radically alter our election systems, drive up costs, and leave tens of millions of American citizens unable to vote.

It would also end all third-party voter registration drives since only government officials would be able to review and accept the proof of citizenship. Online Voter Registration would end nationwide, as would mail-in registration, since proof of citizenship would need to be presented in-person, forcing Americans everywhere to travel and brave long lines every time they update their registration. This would drive up costs for states forced to abandon cost-effective online systems for labor-intensive in-person registration.

It would hurt tens of millions of voting-eligible American citizens who would be prevented from voting. As many as 21 million Americans don’t have ready access to proof of citizenship. Up to 69 million women have birth certificates that do not match their current name. Other voters lack transportation.

Please vote NO on the SAVE Act, H.R. 22 / S. 128.

Indivisible's guide, "EXPLAINER: How Senate Democrats Can Delay & Defy Trump's Agenda with Procedural Hardball," outlines strategies for Senate Democrats to counter President Trump's initiatives despite being in the minority. Key tactics include:

  • Unified Opposition: Encouraging all Democratic senators to vote "NO" on every Trump nominee, compelling Republicans to secure every vote and increasing pressure during any GOP absences or internal divisions.

  • Quorum Calls: Utilizing quorum calls to verify the presence of a majority, thereby slowing down Senate proceedings and highlighting Republican attendance issues.

  • Blocking Unanimous Consent: Objecting to routine unanimous consent requests to expedite proceedings, forcing formal processes and debates, which can delay legislative actions.

These procedural tools are designed to protect minority rights in the Senate and can be effectively employed to challenge and delay the administration's agenda.
